Additional Immigration Reforms

Alongside the introduction of digital landing and exit cards, Nigeria has launched a fully digital e-Visa system, replacing the previous visa-on-arrival policy. The e-Visa application is processed entirely online, with approvals expected within 48 hours. The new system aims to enhance national security and streamline the visa application process.

Furthermore, the NIS has announced that overstay penalties will take effect from September 1, 2025. Foreigners who overstay their visas will incur a daily fine of $15. Those who overstay for three months or more will face a five-year entry ban, while overstays of one year or more will result in permanent blacklisting from entering Nigeria.

To facilitate compliance with the new regulations, a three-month grace period from May 1 to August 1, 2025, has been granted. During this period, foreigners currently residing in Nigeria with expired visas may return to their home countries without incurring any penalties.
